Diabetic neuropathy is a nerve disorder that is usually caused by diabetes. After awhile high blood sugar levels damage the nerves throughout your body. There are three types of neuropathy.

The first type is peripheral neuropathy, which results from damage to the peripheral nervous system. This type reduces your ability to feel pain, to sense touch, and to feel both temperature and vibration. It can also effect your vitality and muscle strength. Most of the time it affects the feet and lower legs. It is the common form of diabetic neuropathy.

Autonomic neuropathy is the second type. It affects the nerves that control the involuntary functions of your body such as heartbeat, blood pressure, sweating, digestion and urination.

The final type is focal neuropathy, which affects a single, specific nerve usually in the wrist, thigh or foot. Sometimes it can also affect the nerves in the back and chest or those that control the eye. This type typically develops suddenly and is the rarest form of neuropathy.

The higher your blood sugar levels are, the greater chance you have of developing diabetic neuropathy. Your risk is also increased by your age and the length of time you have had diabetes. Smoking and excessive alcohol increases the risk. Around half of the people with diabetes will eventually develop diabetic neuropathy.

Symptoms will vary depending on the nerves that are injured. General symptoms include an inability to feel pain. When the internal organs become involved there are a number of symptoms that can result from digestive symptoms to temperature regulation problems.

There is currently no cure for diabetic neuropathy. Treatment largely consists of slowing the progress on the disease. However, keeping your blood sugar levels under control can help prevent diabetic neuropathy from developing. By detecting the problem early, you can also prevent more severe problems and the risk of complications.
